BIO

Alan Scott Berger (born November 8, 1949) is an American male musician, published songwriter, arranger, and producer who goes by the stage name of AL DOC BERGER. The 'doc' says that "it is blurry whether BRUCE SPRINGSTEEN or LITTLE STEVEN VAN ZANDT dubbed me with that nickname after all this time". The 'Doc' went to Berklee College of Music in Boston soon after high school.

Moving on, Al joined up on the road with the oldies group THE DOVELLS where he met and played with the master of 'taste and soul tunes' Miami Steve Van Zandt. Berger however, is best known for his bass playing and songwriting for SOUTHSIDE JOHNNY AND THE ASBURY JUKES (SSJ&AJ) in which he was the original founding bass player member, and who has written such Juke hits as "I Remember Last Night", "The Time", and the recorded but deliciously unreleased "Tight Squeeze" (the former 2 songs still getting airplay in Europe. Picked by Cashbox and Record World,the music industry magazines, as "songs to watch"). "I Remember Last Night" received 4-times-a-day rotation upon its release on New York City's WNEW, FM radio station.

While with SSJ&AJ Al Doc Berger's highlights include playing live at the CRYSTAL PALACE outdoor 3 day festival (England's Woodstock-estimated at 200,000 people) headlined by SANTANA, opened up for the ROLLING STONES at Soldier Field Football stadium in Chicago (estimated 75,000-85,000 people), played music for and appeared in a full length major motion picture feature called 'Between The Lines' starring Jeff Goldblum, Stephen Collins,Marilu Henner, John Heard and Michael J. Pollard.

He has had extensive touring experiences playing live nationally and internationally visiting such countries as England, Germany, Belgium,Sweden, Wales, Canada, Finland, Scotland, France and Norway. The 'Doc' has also played live and/or recorded with such notables as Bruce Springsteen, Miami Steve Van Zandt, Jon Bon Jovi, Charlie Daniels, Sam Moore (Sam and Dave), Eddie Levert (Ojays), Junior Wells, Boz Scaggs, Huey Lewis, Ronnie Spector, Mitch Ryder, and many of the 50's and 60's oldies groups such as the Drifters, the Coasters, the Five Satins, the Crystals, the Dovells, and many more.

Al Doc Berger has had the good fortune of recording in many major recording studios such as the Record Plant in New York City (Jimmy Iovne engineer), Muscle Shoals (Barry Beckett producer), CBS studios, Todd Rundgren Bearsville affiliate, and Sigma Sound in Philly to name a few.

Alan went on to form his own band which he named AL DOC BERGER'S NIGHTHEAT and the first incarnation was put together in the 80's and kept true to the R & B sensibilities that hallmarked his stint with SSJ&AJ. The band played live extensively in NY & NJ in such venues as the STONE PONY(NJ) and the HEARTBREAK showcase club in NYC and received a recording contract offer from the famed OLD TOWN record label; highlighting those efforts of the early days for AL DOC BERGER'S NIGHTHEAT. He also did a joyful stint with blues legend BILLY HECTOR'S FAIRLANES.
